Sunset Water Facility System Improvements

ESSCO Group provided design and construction management services for the comprehensive rehabilitation of two 4 million gallon (MG) storage reservoirs, the replacement of the 24-inch yard piping system, and the design of a new 5.6 million gallon ground storage reservoir.

Key Challenges and Solutions:

  • Emergency Response: The project evolved into an emergency response effort due to an earthquake that caused significant leaking in one of the existing reservoirs. Our team, in collaboration with Consor, conducted an immediate condition assessment and collaborated with local contractors to develop expedited design documents for the complete replacement of the yard piping system and the rehabilitation of the affected reservoir.
  • Innovative Technology Implementation: To restore the structural integrity of the 100-year-old concrete reservoirs, we implemented cutting-edge NSF 61 certified carbon fiber technology. This advanced solution provided the necessary strength and durability, ensuring the long-term functionality of the reservoirs.
  • Comprehensive Design: The design of the new 24-inch yard piping system was tailored to meet the operational needs of EPWater. Key features included new flow control valves, a redundant motorized butterfly valve, surge protection piping, isolation capabilities, new flow meters, and a new instrumentation sub-panel.
  • Ongoing Development: Our team is currently developing detailed design documents for the construction of a new 5.6 million gallon Type III prestressed concrete ground storage reservoir. This addition will enhance the storage capacity and operational efficiency of the Sunset Water Facility.
